- Brand
- Kutani

A large Japanese Kutani ware lion, or shishi, in a rich red-orange glazed ceramic finish. Shishi lions are traditionally associated with protection and believed to ward off evil spirits; this example has an intricately modelled mane, curled tail, powerful stance and characterful expression, with one paw resting on an elaborately decorated ball. A substantial decorative piece that works well on the floor, on a low console or in an entrance hall.
