Large Japanese Kutani Ware Shishi Lion Sculpture

A wonderfully expressive large-scale Japanese Kutani ware lion, or shishi, rendered in a rich red-orange glazed ceramic finish.

Traditionally associated with protection and believed to ward off evil spirits, shishi lions have been used in Japanese decorative arts for centuries. This substantial example has a particularly dramatic presence, with an intricately modelled mane, curled tail, powerful stance and characterful facial expression.

The lion rests its paw upon an elaborately decorated ball, adding further colour and ornamental detail to the sculpture. At approximately 50cm high and 50cm wide, it is a substantial decorative piece that works particularly well placed on the floor, a low console or within an entrance hall.

An unusual statement object for collectors of Japanese ceramics or for an interior requiring something distinctive and highly decorative.
