How We Grade Our Furniture
Every listing on Meubles Monaco carries a condition grade, so you know what to expect before you reserve. This page explains how those grades are set, what each one means, and how to check a piece for yourself before you pay in full.
How a grade is assigned
We don’t inspect each piece in person. Furniture stays in the seller’s home until it is collected, so every grade is based on the information the seller provides and our review of it:
- The seller’s photographs, taken in good natural light and showing any marks, wear or repairs.
- The seller’s description, covering age, materials, dimensions and any known flaws.
- Our review of both. We compare the photos with the description, ask follow-up questions where something is unclear, and request close-ups when we need a better look.
- Brand details and documentation where available, such as receipts, labels or certificates.
If we are not confident a listing is accurate, we ask for more information or decline to list it.
The five grades
Excellent
As new or showroom condition.
- No visible signs of wear or use
- Often new, ex-display or barely used
- Ideal for collectors or interiors that call for a flawless finish
Example: a contemporary Eichholtz table from a display home.
Very Good
Light wear consistent with gentle use.
- Minimal surface marks, visible only up close
- Fully functional and structurally sound
- The best balance of quality and value
Example: a Poliform armchair with barely perceptible wear to the fabric.
Good
Visible signs of use, but well cared for.
- Small scratches, soft patina or natural ageing of materials
- Fully functional, with no repairs needed
- For buyers who appreciate a lived-in character
Example: a Cassina coffee table with light surface marks on its glass top.
Fair
Noticeable wear or minor flaws.
- Visible scratches, dents or fading
- May have small chips or minor past restoration
- A good option for creative interiors or vintage enthusiasts
Example: a Plexiglas chair with wear along its edges.
Restoration Needed
A project piece with potential.
- Structural or cosmetic restoration recommended
- Suited to collectors, restorers or bespoke interiors
- Usually valued for its design or rarity rather than its condition
Example: a mid-century wooden console that needs refinishing.
See it before you pay in full
Because grades are based on photographs and the seller’s own information, we encourage every buyer to see a piece before paying the balance:
- Reserve online for €25. The piece is held while we confirm availability with the seller.
- We introduce you to the seller so you can arrange a viewing.
- Check the piece in person, using the checklist below.
- Complete the purchase with the payment link we send at the viewing, or by bank transfer for pieces over €1,500. Your €25 is deducted, the piece is paid in full before you take it away, and you receive a proof of purchase to show the seller.
What to check at a viewing
- Overall condition: does it match the photos and the grade?
- Size: measure the piece, and check your doorways, lift and stairs.
- Upholstery: look for stains, odours, worn seams and tired cushions.
- Wood and lacquer: look for scratches, water rings and lifting veneer.
- Marble, stone and glass: look for chips, cracks and repairs.
- Moving parts: try drawers, hinges, extensions and reclining mechanisms.
- Designer pieces: look for labels, stamps or serial numbers.
If something isn’t as described
If a piece is materially different from its listing, tell us before you pay the balance or collect it, and we will help resolve it. Where an item has been materially misrepresented, your €25 reservation may be refunded. See our Refund Policy for details.
For sellers: clear photos, accurate grades
